Bath Abbey decided to sell its pews as part of its ‘Footprints’ Project plans in 2014.
Jules Mittra is the Founder of Around & About Bath, a local tour start up whose goal is to transform the ‘touring’ by sharing the best and breadth of the Bath region in a way that is personal, meaningful and authentic. In November 2018, he heard of the sale of Bath Abbey’s pews and enquired to buy one, with the intention of reducing it in size and using the off-cut wood to make some unique mementos for the guests on his company’s tours.
In March 2019, he was contacted by the Abbey’s team and invited to collect his pew. He arrived at the giant hanger in which the pews were stored, to discover that the larger pews had not sold due to their size and were due to be offered to a clearance company. Around and About Bath was growing at such a rate that it required investment, and Jules, a former History and Politics teacher, immediately saw the value of the pews as an opportunity to further capitalise his nascent business, recognising both their unique provenance and the extraordinary design and craftmanship reflected in them.
He immediately decided to acquire the remaining pews with the intention of saving them in order to offer them to individuals who would value and appreciate them, whilst providing him with the necessary finance required to grow his core business further.
